Everyone loves a good shoot ‘em up, fast moving, international thriller, and I am no exception. But what makes an ordinary international thriller good? It’s all in the eyes of the beholder, of course, but I believe three ingredients are essential: 1) The story should take place in a time and location that readers can relate to or would like to know more about; 2) The plot has to be interesting and believable; not too complicated and not too simple; and 3) There should be a rich cast of supporting characters who literally represent the good, the bad, and the ugly; and if the reader has trouble divining the true motive of the characters, it’s even better.
Deborah and Joel Schlian combined the above listed ingredients into a delightful dish called Rabbit in the Moon which is an eminently readable book. The story takes place mostly in China. China, you say? Everyone is talking about China these days! But this is a different China; namely the China of 1989 when the students were rising up against the old guard and Tiananmen Square was just around the corner.
